Overview
In his exhibition at the Verena Kerfin Gallery, Stefan Rinck transforms the material clay into a stage for fascination and transformation. Clay morphs into feathers, fur, and scales that envelop fantastical creatures, evoking both medieval monsters and grotesque fabled beings. These entities, adorned with fangs and claws, firmly root themselves in the tradition of medieval bestiaries. Yet, rather than evoking fear, they emit a peculiar charm that simultaneously captivates and amuses the viewer.

The figures appear as though pieced together from a patchwork of animal body parts, inviting the viewer to assemble their fragments into a meaningful whole. This reconstruction goes beyond mere assembly—it challenges us to “read” these creatures. Each monster becomes a meticulous physiological study, symbolizing inner emotional states and the intricate passions that coexist within a single consciousness.

Rinck’s creations engage in a dialogue with art history. They recall the hybrid beings of Hieronymus Bosch or the grotesque gargoyles of medieval cathedrals, reflecting human fears and fascinations in equal measure. At the same time, they draw upon surrealist traditions, where the juxtaposition of disparate elements questions the perception of boundaries and categories. These references imbue Rinck’s work with historical depth, framing it as a contemporary extension of a centuries-old discourse.

Yet, Rinck’s figures are not merely aesthetic objects. They embody philosophical reflections on processes of interpretation and categorization. Assembling fragments requires division and analysis, but it also transcends boundaries and creates new spaces of meaning. Within this tension, Rinck’s clay creatures interrogate the construction of norms and their inherent contradictions. They demonstrate differences on multiple levels—physical, cultural, and linguistic—while revealing that norms themselves often harbor deviations within.

The material of clay, with its raw, malleable nature, plays a pivotal role in Rinck’s work. Under his hands, it becomes a medium of storytelling that symbolizes transformation. Simple materials are alchemically reshaped into complex creations teeming with vitality and texture. Rinck underscores the transformative power of art: the ability to elevate the mundane into the extraordinary.

Despite their monstrous forms, these beings exude an unexpected playfulness. Their exaggerated features and humorous details forge an emotional connection, making the sculptures accessible on a deeper level. This interplay between humor and seriousness mirrors the complexity of human experience, rendering the exhibition both entertaining and thought-provoking.

The exhibition space amplifies this effect. With its minimalist, dark walls, it provides a stark backdrop that highlights the vibrant and textured sculptures. The contrast between the luminous figures and their subdued surroundings brings the creatures to life, emphasizing their intricate details. The space becomes a stage where Rinck’s beings take center stage as protagonists in a unique artistic production.

Stefan Rinck’s exhibition is more than a showcase of artistic mastery. It is a “De-Monstration”—a deconstructive exploration of what it means to be monstrous. His whimsical yet profound creations invite viewers to look beyond the surface and uncover the intricate narratives hidden within. They offer an opportunity to see and feel more than words can express, revealing that monsters often tell us more about ourselves than we might expect.
