Overview
Layers of wax applied to the folded surfaces of the paintings penetrate their silky skin, rendering them transparent and eventually revealing parts of the wooden support structures beneath. This exposure is part of a deconstruction process that Giorgos Kontis’ works undergo during their conception and creation. It evokes a moment akin to pouring a glass of water over a white T-shirt — just a few minutes pass until it dries, and the hidden secrets of the work retreat into obscurity once again.
At first glance, Kontis’ works appear minimalistic and rigorously constructed, yet upon closer inspection, they reveal a multilayered aesthetic that embodies both fragility and a subtle sensuality. The folding and layering of materials, combined with their transparency and the unveiling of internal structures, generate a tension between the visible and the hidden, the solid and the ephemeral.
Each layer and intervention on the surface of his works reflects a process that captures the essence of transformation and transience. The use of wax, wood, and canvas serves not only as a means of construction but also as a metaphorical medium. Wax — a substance that is simultaneously malleable and solidified — plays a pivotal role, offering both transparency and density. Combined with the underlying wooden structures, this interplay of light and shadow challenges and deepens the viewer's perception.
On a conceptual level, Kontis questions the boundaries of the painting as an object. By exposing the structural elements of his works, he invites the viewer to contemplate the fundamental mechanisms of painting itself. This creates a dialogue between materiality and immateriality, making the work appear both tangible and transcendent.
The paintings — if they can be called such — function less as traditional images and more as visual spaces for reflection. Their surfaces, with seemingly accidental yet precise structures, resemble mental topographies. They invite the viewer to embark on a meditative journey — one that confronts them with their own fragility and the hidden layers of perception.
In this exhibition, Kontis’ ability to transform the visual language of painting into an experience that is both sensory and intellectual becomes evident. By guiding the viewer through the interplay of concealment and revelation, he creates an intimate encounter with art that provokes thought while offering aesthetic pleasure.
