In the exhibition Landscape as Sign Thomas Baumhekel presents works deeply rooted in the traditions of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy. The focus lies not on a narrative interpretation of the characters but on their formal quality and the dynamic process of writing. Baumhekel draws from the Chinese Fei-Bai technique, where spontaneous and fragmented brushstrokes create visible gaps and movement. This approach emphasizes the interplay between line and emptiness, giving his works a richly textured quality.
In these works, calligraphy becomes an abstract translation of natural phenomena. The characters flow, break apart, and extend like water—metaphors for the perpetual cycle of becoming and passing. Baumhekel’s treatment of characters as independent aesthetic forms allows them to exist beyond traditional readings, while still remaining conceptually significant.
Often executed on driftwood, Baumhekel’s pieces blend tradition with his personal interpretation of the art form. His exploration of the relationship between text and image is reflected in his minimalist use of black ink and the bold, clear shapes that balance chaos and order.
